Today in History: 10 May 1940


World War II: The United Kingdom Invades Iceland

On this day in 1940, Operation Fork (The Invasion of Iceland) began early in the morning in the capital Reykjavik. The objective was to prevent German occupation and the promise was made to withdraw at the conclusion of the war. The British troops were relieved by American troops a year later, before the US had officially entered the war.

Today in History: 27 March 1886


Apache Warrior Geronimo Surrenders

On this day in 1886, the Apache Wars draw to a conclusion with the surrender of Geronimo in the United States. According to Geronimo, the terms of his surrender were not met, which if true, was yet another example of the lack of honour of generations of Americans when dealing with native Indians. In his latter years, Geronimo regretted his surrender and was never allowed to return to his homeland.
