The link below is to an article (with photos) concerning the S.S. Gairsoppa, which was sunk by a Nazi U-boat in 1941. The wreck is deeper than the Titanic and salvage work has been removing its precious cargo.

English Author Hugh Walpole Was Born

On this day in 1884, English novelist Hugh Walpole was born in Auckland, New Zealand, before moving to England in his early years. During his life (which ended on the 1st June 1941) he wrote 36 novels, many short stories and two plays. He was a best-selling auther throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

Banjo Paterson Born

On this day in 1864, Australian poet, journalist and author, Andrew Barton Paterson (Banjo Paterson) was born. Paterson was born near Orange in New South Wales, Australia. Banjo died on the 5th February 1941 in Sydney, Australia.

His most important works include ‘Waltzing Matilda,’ ‘The Man From Snowy River‘ and ‘Clancy of the Overflow.’
